An air conditioner’s worst enemies in hot weather

The summer season is already well underway, and we have already experienced some intense heat, with no signs of it relenting. When the temperature rises and a heatwave is on the horizon, all we want is to cool down as quickly as possible. Fortunately, air conditioners are here for that purpose, but before cranking up the AC to the maximum, there are a few simple steps that can be taken to use your unit as efficiently as possible. This will help you avoid breakdowns or excessive energy consumption.

Temperature Limitation

It’s difficult to hold back when the temperature reaches its peak, but the air conditioner should never be set more than 8 degrees below the outdoor temperature. Ideally, a temperature difference of 5 degrees would be recommended. This way, you’ll avoid thermal shocks that can cause discomfort such as headaches or dizziness, and you’ll also limit energy consumption.

Insulate the Interior

To use your air conditioner properly, it’s best to remember to close doors and windows. This prevents drafts, and you should turn off the air conditioner when it’s time to ventilate to avoid unnecessary energy consumption. Using an air conditioner does not exempt us from taking all precautions to maintain coolness during heatwaves. Therefore, be sure to close the curtains during periods of intense heat.

Limit or Not the Use of the Air Conditioner?

Some recommend turning off the unit when leaving the house, while others suggest leaving it on. The question arises depending on the level of heat. If the temperature is tolerable, there is no need to run the air conditioner continuously. A few hours will suffice to cool down the house. However, during a heatwave, the air will warm up much more quickly. It is then wiser to leave the air conditioner running at a reasonable temperature rather than cranking it up when the air warms up again.

Air Conditioning and Comfort

The air conditioning system tends to dry out the air. Using an air conditioner can have unpleasant effects on the eyes, sinuses, and throat. Therefore, it is even more important to use it judiciously. Direct the air outlets toward the ceiling to distribute the cool air more effectively and reduce skin dryness. It is also important to turn off the air conditioner during the coolest hours to ventilate and refresh the indoor air.

Maintenance

Optimal use of an air conditioner also includes its maintenance. The unit should be regularly dusted to prevent accumulations that could block the air distribution and cause the air conditioner to overconsume energy. The filter should also be cleaned every two weeks to optimize its performance.
